If you are a victim of anxiety attacks yourself, you will surely know that these things are to be taken seriously. In fact, panic attacks can actually cripple a person from leading a normal life. Fortunately, there are steps which could take, when you have that gut feel that another attack is coming your way. Let us have a look at some of the steps that you could take.

There are some early signs of an anxiety attack. It starts with rapid heartbeat, breathlessness and a feeling of lightheartedness. If they are really serious, the panic attacks can make you lose consciousness. The first thing you ought to do when you see these signs developing is to take slow and deep breaths. Deep breathing will calm your heart beats and prevent that feeling of lightheartedness.

The next step you have to take is to think of something positive as soon as you sense the onslaught of the attack. It is a difficult task indeed. In fact, most people find it hard to think of anything else other than the negative thought that is bothering them at that point of time. Since these attacks have to fixed reason for their arrival, it can be more difficult for you to think of anything else. In any case, you should try and focus your attention on something which makes you feel happy, like some fond childhood memories, or a walk on a sunny beach or a stroll in a beautiful garden, etc.

While thinking about positive and good things help some people from an anxiety attack, it does not work with many. For such people being with people who can completely divert attention to more positive things can be of greater help. Well-meaning friends, happy children and generally people who can shift the suffering mind from negative thoughts to positive imagery can often prevent an anxiety attack for many people. The stressed and over-worked mind can get great relief in the company of people who laugh and joke readily. Since loneliness is often a trigger for such attacks, help is readily available on the internet through hundreds of chat rooms, where you can simply go online and talk to complete strangers and feel connected once again. Talking about your problems and sharing them with other people can work as a wonderful therapy for anxiety attacks.

The other help for preventing a panic attack is to depend on medication. Visit a mental health professional, called a psychotherapist or a psychologist and talk to him about your problems. There is a wide variety of anti-anxiety medications available in the market which is very helpful in preventing panic attacks. Xanax, Lorazepam, and Valium are some of the medications which can be taken on an ‘as you need’ basis – which means take them when you feel an attack coming on. These medicines can quickly calm your brain. The correct medicine along with the correct dosage can only be evaluated by your doctor who will examine your case exclusively. Your condition will then be monitored by your doctor regularly who can even adjust the dosage or even change your medication depending on any side effect etc. It is recommended that these medications should be ingested only upon the advice of a regular doctor.

The last method of controlling your attacks is to take professional help. Remember each case is different. So your doctor can give you personalized advice depending on your needs. This requires your frank confession to your doctor about all that has happened or is happening to your life and your personal conclusions from these events. Being candid about your condition can make you get the best help possible.

Thus there is nothing to lose hope if you are an unfortunate victim of panic attacks. Taking these simple steps will definitely show you a way to lead a better quality of life.
