Coming to Terms with Anxiety
By: Darren Williger
Anxiety is a silent killer. With over a million people in the US alone suffering from this common disorder, it is important to know that anxiety is more than feeling nervous and tense. To know whether you are suffering from this incapacitating disorder, you must learn to identify and differentiate it from an ordinary feeling of nervousness.
How to know that it is anxiety: During a serious condition of anxiety disorder, the first thing that you can notice is that your heart beats much faster than usual. This rapid heartbeat can cause unbearable dizziness and even loss of consciousness. Of course, this is an extreme situation which is also known as a panic attack. In case, this happens to you, you should immediately consult a doctor.
Another type of anxiety disorder is called Social Anxiety Disorder – a condition where the sufferer feels extremely conscious of people around him or her. This makes interacting with family, friends, colleagues and even strangers a major issue and the sufferer eventually will try to hide from any kind of social interaction. To the outside world, this person will usually be treated as an introvert.
Anxiety disorders can manifest itself in more than one way. It can throw the functioning of the brain in complete disarray, to the extent that the person has problem getting out of bed, thinking that some disaster is at large which might hit him during the day. This usually results from a personal trauma, like death of a dear one, failed relationship or some other similar negative incident. This symptom, if left untreated, can completely ruin a person’s mental faculties.
How to keep anxiety under control: Though anxiety symptoms can ruin a person’s life and mental faculties, it can be brought under manageable limits with proper treatment. For instance, the person who treats this type of condition is called a psychologist, who can be consulted by anyone who is suffering from these types of symptoms. The psychologist can bring about significant improvements in the condition by techniques, like relaxation, etc. Even a counseling session with the doctor and talking to someone about the problems can help ease the situation. In case the situation demands medication, there are a lot of anti-anxiety drugs like Ativan, Lorazepam, Xanax, and Valium which may be prescribed. In any case, if the anxiety symptoms continue to seriously disrupt someone’s normal life, you must seek medical help at the earliest, as there is definite relief with medication.
In conclusion, anxiety is a mental disorder which can be a result of various negative and unfortunate situations in life which we have to learn to live and cope with. In case we find the symptoms get so overwhelming that it is not allowing us to live life normally, we should seek medical intervention at the very earliest, so that adequate counseling and medication can be advised. The good thing about anxiety is that you can always keep it under check to lead a better quality of life.
