The Connection of Sleep Disorders, Depression and Anxiety
By: Leon Lioe
It's common that everyone has a difficulty in getting a good night’s sleep once in a while. There are a number of factors that can contribute to having a restless night. Sometimes something as simple as a warm temperature can contribute to having difficulty dozing off. Of course, there can also be a number of more serious factors that can contribute to being unable to fall asleep.
Particularly, the connection among sleep disorders, depression and anxiety can not be taken lightly because these factors of causing inability to sleep at night are often caused by a serious underlying psychological and psychiatric problem.
Understanding the Connection among Sleep Disorders, Depression and Anxiety:
There are a number of serious psychiatric conditions that can exist. For example, bipolar disorder, General Anxiety Disorder and obsessive compulsive behavior can all contribute to sleep disorders. Also, it must be noted that sleep disorders do not always refer to the inability to fall asleep. Some sleeping disorders involve the inability to stay awake.
In some cases, the inability to stay awake can develop into and combine with the inability to fall asleep as well. This condition is known as the combination of bipolar sleep disorders, depression and anxiety. As such, proper treatment is required to counter such problems.
Proper Treatment for Sleep Disorders, Depression and Anxiety:
The first step to treat sleep disorders, depression and anxiety is to have a complete examination by a psychiatrist. If the psychiatrist notes that a serious problem is present, then he/she will likely work out a solid plan and prescriptions that will alleviate the problems. Many people like to self-medicate with over the counter stimulants and/or sleeping aids. If that is you, do remember that these over the counter products lack therapeutic value and do not truly address the serious underlying problem. Therefore, proper medical care is of the utmost importance.
So, if symptoms of sleep disorder, depression and anxiety are seemingly manifesting in you, you should seek medical care as soon as possible. Do not wait until the problem or condition gets out of hand.
