Entomophobia is the fear of insects. It is closely related to arachnophobia and is one of the most common animal phobias. The phobia can range from mild discomfort around insects to severe panic that prevents outdoor activities, gardening, or eating in areas where insects are present.
Symptoms of Entomophobia
- Intense anxiety or panic when insects are present
- Avoidance of outdoor spaces, gardens, and picnics
- Inability to eat food that insects have been near
- Extreme reactions to harmless insects
- Physical symptoms: trembling, sweating, screaming
Causes of Entomophobia
- Evolutionary threat response (some insects are genuinely dangerous)
- Childhood traumatic encounter with insects
- Learned behaviour from a fearful parent
- Disgust sensitivity
